The Miss Marshall Islands Pageant (MMIP) was developed in 2019, with 24 contestants representing each atoll in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. The MMIP core committee began with the Kora in Okrane (KIO Club), the Ministry of Natural Resources and Commerce (MNRC), and the Office of Commerce, Investment, and Tourism (OCIT) as the lead in this initiative. The Miss Marshall Islands program was created not only to promote the Marshall Islands as a tourism destination but also to honor the attributes, intelligence, and talents of our Marshallese women. This pageant was viewed as an opportunity to better foster these young Marshallese women into becoming future leaders. The program involves a week long of workshops focusing on challenging issues in the RMI and providing a chance for young women to improve themselves through public speaking, critical thinking, interviews and other empowering activities. We have faith that by participating in this pageant, the young women will gain a better understanding of the significance of being active members of their communities, providing services and speaking out in support of causes that are important to them.
After the resounding success of the Miss Marshall Islands Pageant in 2019, which raised global awareness as well as the profile of the Marshall Islands in the regional and international arena, the MMIP core committee continued work on the second pageant with the National Energy Office as a new partner. The MMIP 2023 was originally scheduled to take place in August 2022 but was postponed to January 27–February 4, 2023 due to the COVID strike and closed borders. In contrast to the previous pageant, the MNRC has incorporated their "One Island, One Product" initiative, which entails each atoll promoting and displaying the products throughout the event. Organizing a grande event such as this is a lot of work and despite the numerous postponements, the MMIP core committee deserves the credit for making all of these events possible. An additional resounding success is imminent.
