Informal Thai Tourism Workers Project

While tourism promotes iconic destinations and sites, it’s the people we meet there that bring to life the local experiences and make the memories unforgettable - the informal workers in the tourism supply chain. Even though they make up a majority of tourism employment and provide the majority of the entrepreneurial opportunities to women, youth, and elderly, this vital sector lacks voice and is too often excluded from industry discussions.

PATA and the Roundtable Human Rights in Tourism have launched a programme to assist informal workers by hiring the unemployed freelance tour guides and under-employed tourism professionals to support fellow informal workers in Bangkok, Thailand. They will also work with PATA and civil society organisations to deliver community-based training on topics like enhanced hygiene and new protocols for welcoming back travellers.
