From December 2019 to July 17, 2022, Pohnpei Port Authority (PPA) has been in the forefront of guaranteeing the safety and security of combating COVID-19 from entering its Point of Entry. When the FSM National Government and Pohnpei State Government declared the State of Emergency of COVID-19 Pandemic, PPA shifted its focus toward COVID-19 and implemented the PPA COVID-19 Contingency Plan that consists of preparation and preventive measures. FSM Taskforce, Pohnpei State Taskforce, UNICEF, IOM, FSM Department of Health, Pohnpei Primary Health Care, Pohnpei State Hospital, and private businesses were prompt to support PPA to safeguard the borders of Pohnpei State.

Preparation and Preventive Measures 2020

Drastically, PPA seized activities regarding the Pacific Asia Travel Associations (PATA) due to the National and State Government’s Constitutional Order or Executive Orders that restricted air and sea transportations. Due to FSM citizens stranded in Guam and other countries, PPA worked diligently to meet with FSM COVID-19 Taskforce requirements and compliances regarding safety procedures of operating repatriation flights. Pohnpei International Airport assessed and met the requirements and compliances from FSM COVID-19 Taskforce and operated the first repatriation flights to Pohnpei State.

Repatriation Flight for Stranded Citizens in Guam 2021

On July 19, 2022, the first 3 COVID-19 positive cases were confirmed on the Island of Pohnpei and these cases were from the communities that multiply as each goes by. PPA implemented the PPA COVID-19 Safety Operation Plan to cope with COVID-19 community-wide spread and maintain consistent port operations.

Finally, the Healthy Protection Border Act mandated the opening of the FSM Point of Entries and the Pohnpei International Airport first flight was on August 1, 2022. Now PPA recur all types of operations and services with COVID-19 preventive measures.
